School Counseling Department

Guidance Plan

The following pages outline the district-wide Counseling and Development plan. In accordance with the national standards for a school counseling program, as set forth by the American School Counseling Association, the primary function of the school counseling department is to facilitate student development in three broad content areas: academic development, career development and personal/social development. Therefore, we targeted these three areas as goals throughout each grade level providing a clear understanding of how we are to meet the goals set by the American School Counseling Association.

As you will see in the following pages, the plan is broken down by grade and by school. A committee was developed to review and improve the original guidance plan, developed in September 1983. In addition, because the Ossining Union Free School District has recognized the existence of an achievement gap, special attention has been given to provide services to our minority families. You will notice that many of the goals include a plan to reach out to minority families in an effort to encourage participation in educational opportunities.
