Brookside Elementary School

Dear Brookside Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Brookside!  Mr. Toral, the Brookside Faculty and I are so happy to welcome all of our first graders and their families. We also cannot wait to see our second graders. It has been a long six months since we have seen students’ smiling faces and we cannot wait! Please be assured that whether we see your child virtually or in person, we will ensure they have a great year of learning. Yet, we know after six months away from school during tumultuous times, you and your child(ren) will need special care and support to transition back to school. This reminds me of Mr. Rogers advice to look for the helpers in times of trouble. As your helpers, please know that we are here for you with open arms. In fact, our theme this year is “Brookside - where    Superheroes are Everywhere!”.

As Dr. Sanchez informed you recently, school now begins on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 with all students learning remotely until September 21st when school will reopen for hybrid students.  Beginning on September 9, 2020, attendance will be taken daily from 8:50am - 9:05am through Google Meet. The school day officially begins at 9:05am and ends at 3:05pm for all students, 100% remote and hybrid alike.  Please look out for instructional schedules from your child’s schedule electronically before September 9th when your child will join his/her class for the first time. As a result, it is essential that we have your accurate email address on file. Attendance and participation in the daily schedule whether in person or virtual is mandated as well as vital to your child's progress. In addition to attendance and participation, it is very important that student work is submitted via Google Classroom as part of their participation as well as to provide feedback. Once school begins in person for hybrid students, please remember that students must wear masks to school daily.

Enclosed in this letter you will find the school supply list as well as other important information including your child’s school email address (username) and password. Your child will need this in order to access the teacher’s Google Classroom. (Please be assured that students will be taught how to navigate Google Classroom during the beginning weeks of school) Please also find enclosed a Free/Reduced lunch application. School lunch can be ordered daily in the classroom and will be delivered to the classroom.  Please also feel free to send a nut-free lunch from home if you and your child prefer. Please also look out for a mailing from the transportation department that will send out your bus schedule separately. Similarly, please be prepared for new drop off and pick up procedures. Specifically, students will now be dropped to waiting staff members by the door closest to the parking lot beginning at 8:45 am. Pick-up will also take place at this door with first graders with last names A-L dismissing at 3:00 pm followed by first graders with last names M-Z At 3:10 pm, second graders with last names A-L at 3:20 and last names M-Z at 3:30 pm.

You will also be hearing from us at Brookside regularly. In the near future, your child’s teacher will be sending you a time to virtually meet with them next week. Please be on the lookout for this email. Once again, please ensure that we have your correct email address on file. Please also sign up for the “Brookside O-Blast” at in order to receive my weekly message.

After months of planning, I cannot wait for us to begin the year together!  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.  Mr. Toral, the Brookside Faculty and I  look forward to a wonderful school year with your children.
